Anyone in Britain looking at the images out of Belfast from last night’s pogrom and thinking, “That’s Northern Ireland, they’ve always been like that, what can you expect,” is delusional. Those are Unionist areas, UK streets, UK rubbish bins and wheelie bins, UK ambulances and police cars, terraced homes the same as anywhere in the UK. Those fires and thugs are coming for all of us, if Nigel Farage and Rupert Lowe and Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk get their way. The colour of your skin and the sound of your voice won’t protect you on the inside, even if they protect you on the outside: fear will still reach you. And they won’t protect you on the outside for long. Fires in one house soon spread to others, unless brave people put them out.
