Modern life is a nightmare. We walk through each day with an understanding of the tasks laid out before us, reaching in small ways towards long-term goals that are slightly more abstract. But the shape that surrounds our individual places in the world is much harder to define. The cogs and springs that wind and unwind around us and make up the human-made systems defining the structures we move through are both knowable and unknowable in equal measure. There is no one person who could accurately describe each and every aspect of society, account for all of the nuances and break it all down into a digestible set of rules and processes. Sure, individuals can have a slight grasp on many of these systems — and some individuals will even contain a deep understanding of individual systems — but most of what we consider to be daily life is comprised of abstruse patterns at best and archaic systems of oppression at worst.
