A dubious study says handwriting improves “brain connectivity” more than typing. I believe it. When I write by hand, my brain is extremely connected — mostly to questions like, “What does this chickenscratch say?” “Damn, my hand hurts!” and “Christ, this is slower than molasses in January.” When I type, by contrast, using my patented index-fingers-plus-right-thumb system, my brain is mainly occupied with correcting typos and noticing that the last two lines have been produced with the caps-lock key still on. So I’m not sure either method makes me think better. Handwriting gives me more time to suffer; typing gives me more chances to correct myself. In the end, the brain connectivity probably evens out.
