Criti-hyping describes the promotional effect of criticizing purported risks of a technology. For example, when debating about AI-consciousness or AI-alignment, we are in effect advertising AI while also relieving Big Tech from their burden of proof to demonstrate that auto-correct on steroids AI can somehow go from a chat-bot for entertainment purposes to a conscious super-human being capable of autonomous self-improvement. Criti-hyping is the unavoidable result of humans having fascinating debates. This post only intends to help create awareness of the existence of criti-hyping, so we may at least avoid contributing should we so prefer.
