Since I started my reding a chapter a day habit I’ve finished nine books. Here are short reviews of the first five. The River Has Roots is a sharp, folklore‑driven story about two sisters, Esther and Ysabel, who spend their days singing to keep the magic of the River Liss in balance. When Esther refuses a local man and instead falls for Rin, a fae being, everything unravels. It’s a short book, but the world feels very lived in, and I finished it wishing there were a few more chapters to sit with the river, the music, and the strange rules of magic that were mostly hinted at. I am a long time fan of Seanan McGuire (although I first discovered here as Mira Grant). Her October Daye series features a P.I. by the same name and can best be described as the faerie court meets hard boiled detective story, set in San Francisco. The stories have gotten progressively more faerie as they go on and each book seems to be more of a roller coaster of danger and magic. They are a lot of fun, but you…
