Metafilter recently discussed the Boston Globe’s ranking of Steven Spielberg’s 34 movies (before his newest arrives), a list which excludes Duel for spurious reasons and which, like any listicle, is obviously wrong in key respects. I’ve seen 28 of the 34 and have a few gaps to fill; I haven’t seen The Fabelmans or The Post yet, and need to do something about that. I’m in less of a rush about Always, Sugarland Express, and Twilight Zone. I can’t remember if I sat all the way through 1941 or if it’s a false memory from seeing clips of it over a lifetime. I’ve seen enough, though, to quibble with more than a few of their rankings. Saying that The Terminal is a better movie than E.T., Close Encounters and Empire of the Sun is just ridiculous. I liked it well enough when I finally saw it recently, it passed the time, but it isn’t even better than West Side Story, War of the Worlds or even A.I. Munich and Lincoln were both good (though I can’t remember much about Munich at this point), but…
