If I had a vial of blood for every 1980s vampire movie that prominently includes a musical artist who established themselves as an artistically significant performer in the 1970s but hit their peak of commercial success in the 1980s and whose strikingly androgynous aesthetic made them icons of gender noncomformity, by my count I’d have two vials of blood. Let’s pop them open and see how they’ve aged… The Hunger Miriam and John Blaylock (Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie) are a duo of vampires living in modern day New York, emerging from their sprawling apartment to seek prey among the nightlife. Miriam is impossibly ancient; John looks 30 but is more like 230. However, whilst Miriam herself enjoys a form of eternal youth, those she turns will eventually wither into husks – husks she can’t bring herself to throw away, at that.
