Just as I’d finished reading my last book, the guardian released their The 100 best novels of all time, and I discover I’ve only read 18 of them. The greatest literature ever published in English, as voted for by authors, critics and academics worldwide. 82 to go! I thought I’d start with the no.1 best novel of all time, Middlemarch (written in 1871, set in 1830’s). Very much enjoyed almost all of the 900 pages! The english is victorian/dickensian, and the book itself is kind of what I imagine austen (no.s 13, 9) or brontë (no.s 20, 8) books would be like. I suppose I ought to tackle one of them soon. The characters were three dimensional – all with hopes met or dashed, and their flaws brutally exposed. Funny, sad, tense, depressing, exciting, and satisfying. Also v long. I wouldn’t put it as my no.1 novel of all time, but I can see why so many people did. Download the ebook free from standard ebooks Standard ebooks collection of many the guardian top 100. Plenty to keep one busy!
