God’s Own Country (2017) (sort of a movie review)

It’s June, and June is Pride. Fuck the bigots, let us hear it for queer stories with happy endings. And if a few xenophobes get their innards in a twist over it, all the better. Beware: racism and xenophobia; drinking to dull pain; several instances of vomiting; internalized homophobia; heart disease and strokes; miserable parenting, swearing. There’s an unlikable disabled character. Maternal abandonment as backstory. There are some scenes involving farm animals that can be upsetting (blood), there’s also some full frontal nudity, as well as explicit sex between consenting adults. “God’s Own Country” (2017) This is a small independent film, and the feature film debut of its writer/director, Francis Lee. It follows Johnny Saxby, a single young man who lives with his disabled father Martin and hardworking grandmother Deirdre, in a small, rundown farm in rural Yorkshire; he’s both deeply lonely and very angry.
