C.S. Lewis, letter to Herbert Palmer (November 8, 1945): We don't cry enough now a days, that's one of the things that is wrong with us. Achilles cried, Roland cried, Lancelot cried. It's in Shakespeare that characters first start apologising for tears. This is of course false, as most gross generalizations are. See Weeping.
