If you evade the commands of a control freak, they'll see you as trying to control them. Similarly, egomaniacs view assertion as challenge. I used to wonder why a book explaining "I'm OK – You're OK" needed to be written, much less sell 15 million copies to readers stunned by the gleaming insight. But I've also wondered why the Golden Rule is widely seen as loftily unattainable.
