Here it is, Shining Force in full 3D. Shining Force on PlayStation 2. Shining Force… …reimagined as a casual action RPG complete with randomised loot and a heavily redesigned Max sporting a tight crop-top. I don’t mind Neo‘s radical departure from the game it’s based on one bit, actually. If there’s one thing that defines Shining as a whole, it’s the series’ refusal to be the same thing from one entry to the next, to keep telling the same story in the same way. So to see this make sweeping changes—even to the shape of the land itself—comes as no great shock, especially not in a series that by this point already featured dungeon crawlers and various flavours of ARPG. Besides, unlike the slightly earlier GBA remake, which insisted on fiddling without any real purpose, this at least knows what it wants to be and chases after its idea with its whole, enthusiastic heart.
