Don Cherry, Henry Grimes & Ed Blackwell - November 1961Jazz scholar Lewis Porter is always turning up interesting and cool artifacts — and recently he shared a great one! An unreleased/unknown session with Don Cherry, Henry Grimes and Ed Blackwell? In 1961?! Sign me up. Some details from Porter: Cherry’s playing is melodic and creative, and I think you will enjoy his work here quite a bit. And his colleagues here are Henry Grimes on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums! There are lots of connections here: Cherry had of course toured with Blackwell in Coleman’s quartet, and he would work with Grimes in Sonny Rollins’s quartet in 1962 and ‘63. Yes indeed, a very enjoyable session — I’m surprised it’s as early as 1961, since it sounds so modern and fresh. But that was Don Cherry, right? Modern, fresh, curious and always a joy to listen to.
