Welcome to The Film Noir Files, the monthly noir series here at Shadows and Satin and over at Speakeasy, the blog authored by my pal Kristina, where each month we recommend a film noir feature for you to watch on TCM. We never know what the other has selected until we post, and part of the fun is trying to never pick the same movie! Deciding on this month’s Film Noir Files recommendation was a no-brainer for me. It’s Nightmare Alley, released in that stellar noir year of 1947, featuring a first-rate cast, and starring Tyrone Power in what I consider to be the best performance of his career. As soon as I saw it listed (and realized that I’ve never covered it on the blog), I knew what my pick for the month would be. From humble beginnings, he rose. The story centers on Power’s character, Stanton Carlisle (how’s that for a name?), who, when we first meet him, is working as a barker in a local carnival.
