Hello and welcome to the new iteration of this site. Let's kick things off with two SciFi books I've read recently. Dangerous Planet I came to this collection with zero expectations. Heh, Soviet short stories? What will they do? Sell communism?! Some stories here are better than others. The best of them is, without a doubt, is Half of Life by Kiri Bułyczow - a story of a girl kidnapped by a UFO. Her diary is found on the wreckage of the ship and we learn her story knowing that she has not returned to Earth. It can be fun, it can be sad, and all of that in the few pages it takes. But look at the whole collection, no story here is bad. Even if they start poorly, shortly after the authors find something interesting to say. There's a common theme and it's surprising how different they are from American literature. When writers from beyond the pond try to show that keeping us away may be the best approach, here human intervention is a good thing. Turns out the Soviets were the optimists.…
