Good Grief
"To avoid sadness... is also to avoid love." A man (Daniel Levy) loses his husband (Luke Evans) unexpectedly and so brings a couple of friends (Ruth Negga, Himesh Patel) with him on a trip to Paris to get away from London. “Extremely rich people also suffer: The Movie.” Perhaps that’s mean and reductive of me, but it’s where I kept coming back to frequently while watching Good Grief. I love Levy’s naturalistic and quiet performance in this film, but he’s written a bit of a listless and languid screenplay here I think. To its credit it frequently finds little moments of power and resonance, but the general lack of a sense of direction curbs some of its emotional impact. Swerves between a touching tale of friendship between broken people, and an irritating portrait of people with too much time and money. Reply by email
