28 May 2026 in Melbourne.Over the past few months I have been getting into old movies, lots of classic noir and such things. At some point my attention was drawn to the 1957 Billy Wilder film Witness for the Prosecution which stars Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich and Tyrone Power. It's a great film and far more fun than any courtroom drama has any right to be.The film is adapted from an Agatha Christie play. So when I realised that there was going to be a production of the play here in ye olde Melbourne, I did not sleep on it.Ye olde is right. The production was staged in the former Magistrate's Court (a heritage building next to the Old Melbourne Gaol). This was a nice touch, and we got seats in the jury box, which further meant we had to stand whenever the judge entered and exited the set.The play itself was very well done, and particularly well cast. I won't go into the plot because that would be spoiling things. Go see the movie and then talk to me about it!
