Pre-Code Crazy is the monthly series here at Shadows and Satin and over at the blog of my pal Kristina, Speakeasy, where each month we recommend a pre-Code film for you to watch on TCM – we never know what the other has selected until we post, and we try to keep our streak intact by never picking the same movie! My Pre-Code Crazy pick for June is not exactly the pre-Codiest feature I’ve ever recommended. Far from it, in fact. But it’s one that I rarely see airing on TCM, and it’s one that you won’t want to miss. It’s Ever in My Heart (1933) and it stars Barbara Stanwyck – and, really, what more do you need to know? The film begins in 1909, in a small town called Archervale, located somewhere in New England – Stanwyck is Mary Archer, daughter of the town’s most prominent family. When the story opens, Mary is awaiting the homecoming of her distant cousin, Jeff (Ralph Bellamy), who’s been in Germany for the last several years and who the family expects her to wed.
