I've been riding a bicycle (as an adult) since 2020, but I only recently picked up my first road bike. As it turns out, a road bike is a very different beast1 than the hybrids I'd been on so far, and I have learned a ton in my first month (and ~325 miles) with the new steed. I'm no bicycle surgeonWhat follows are some of the things that I've picked up on in my relatively short time as a real cyclist. I'm probably going to screw up some terminology and explanations and who knows what else. You can correct me if you'd like, but I'm just letting you know that I'm kind of making this up as I go and if I'm wrong then oh well. Starting with... Getting a grip Look, the bike I'd been on only had one place for me to put my hands. It was either grab on to the flat handlebars or... ride my bike with no handlebars2.
