Book Review: When There Are Wolves Again by E.J. Swift In this book, we follow the lives of two women, from roughly 2020-2070. When There Are Wolves Again by E.J. Swift isn’t so much science fiction; at least not in the sense of “exploring the galaxy in a spaceship”. Instead, we stay right here on planet earth, and see how these women fight for a fairer and eco-friendlier society, all the while facing the brutal effects of ongoing climate change. Please don’t be discouraged by such a bleak theme—I found it a very hopeful book that I’d highly recommend reading. I was impressed by the great storytelling and the outlook Swift sketches. Although it will get tough from time to time, as the activist Lucy also experiences: You care, Gran had told me, as if that would save me. She didn’t say how much it hurt to care, that it was death from a thousand cuts, because everywhere you looked, someone was hacking down an oak or poisoning a jay.
