Before I joined Mastodon in 2022 I had no idea what the Fediverse was. I had never self hosted anything or had my own domain or website and was generally very unaware of a lot of tech stuff. The community there has been great in introducing me to a lot of concepts as well as encouraging me to try stuff. Without that I wouldn’t even have this blog! One thing I did last year was to spin up my own Fediverse instance, just to try it out. I love the Mastodon instance that I’m on (metalhead.club). It’s ran well, based in Europe and full of great people. The character limit on posts is also a sweet 666. Despite the positive experience I decided that for my own experiment, I wanted something different and lighter. Enter GoToSocial. This is a lightweight ActivityPub server that allows you to set up a Fediverse instance. Once I decided that this is the road I was taking I had to decide how to host it.
