Goodbye originated by people saying God Be With You as a phatic, so often and rapidly that over time it mashed together to "godbewiye" and then finally to goodbye. So, saying bye is like saying Be With You very rapidly. Which makes saying bye to someone, very romantic to me. You might be wondering how I know that you're awesome!
