RPG Maker is a great piece of software that lets non-programmers jump straight into the meat of making their own RPGs and top-down narrative games. The best part about it, by far, is the flexibility of its plugin system. The program is nearly wide-open for community members to make their own plugins that change and add new features. Some people share their plugins for free. Many others sell them as paid plugins so they can afford to keep investing the time in it. If you start making a game in RPG Maker, chances are you’ll quickly get bored with the default features the program provides. While I highly suggest you try to make a short gamejam-style project using only the default features, to get a hang of things, I know the siren’s song of plugins will come soon enough. Once you start looking up plugins, you might have the choice paralysis of a kid in a candy store. Similar to buying Photoshop brushes or buying instruments for FL Studio, it’s extremely tempting to go on a shopping spree…
