A lot of companies that build software don’t build products: they build cities. A product is something you create to sell to other people; a city is somewhere you live. If you’re working on the systems that keeps big companies and government agencies running, what you’re doing has a lot more in common with building a new subway line in a crowded residential district than it does with putting tires on a family car.
