I am half-way through my first year of university. I am studying toward an art history degree (although part of me wants to do art history and creative writing, which I would have the option to do starting next year!). The first year of my degree is an introduction to studying humanities, and is divided into two courses: one that covers themes seen through the lenses of different disciplines (i.e. traditions as seen through history and religious studies), and the other that looks at disciplines in depth (art history, classical studies, creative writing, and English literature).In both parts of the course, I have been exposed to so many topics I otherwise may never have encountered: the history of Cleopatra, Elizabeth I’s reign, an analysis of how Mozart built his reputation, and more. In my most recent block, English literature, we were studying Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre.
