Parking problems at hospitals in Halifax has been much in the news. Expansion of the IWK included the teardown of a parking garage, and the construction of new one — on former parkland. And the provincial government’s proud announcement that all hospital parking would be free has, predictably, made parking problems worse. It’s generally accepted that staff can’t rely on public transit to get to and from the hospitals, despite their central location, because Halifax transit is focused on commuters who work 8-4, Monday to Friday. A nurse pulling a 12-hour shift can’t be expected to spend two hours each way on the bus — if there are even routes running when the shift begins or ends. This is, theoretically, an easily solved problem and, in fairness, Halifax Transit is planning to make one route 24/7 next year … the Airport Express.
