I a movie that I recently watched, the weather (a typhoon, to be precise) plays a key role for the progression of the plot. To foreshadow this, weather reports are used as background noise during establishing shots throughout the movie. The camera pans across a room in a house, and somewhere, a voice on the radio talks about the current location of the typhoon and when it's expected to make landfall. This is a common filmmaking technique. For example, a crime drama might start with a policeman reading a newspaper with a murder case on the front page, or the early scenes of an alien movie might feature TV footage of people being interviewed about a strange thing they saw. But for some reason, I really like the weather report version of this trope, specifically. It just feels ... cosy.
