One of the coffee shops I frequent puts a litre bottle of slightly chilled water on the table when you order coffee. I’m used to this at Australian restaurants, but even getting this level of service when you’ve only bought a single beverage and proceed to “nurse” it at your table for the next hour is rather fabulous (if I do say so). I’ll admit, I initially I thought it a bit weird when they started doing this. Why give me an entire bottle of water when only a single glass would suffice? I remember my favourite Viennese coffee house in Singapore—imaginatively titled the Viennese Coffee House—would give me a piccolo-sized glass of sparkling water with my caffeinated beverage of choice. The owner’s daughter was my age at the time (well, and presumably still is), and was genuinely among the kindest people I’ve ever met.
