Chrome’s Silent Gemini Nano Download Has a Consent Problem

The problem is not that Google wants more AI inside Chrome. The problem is that Chrome appears willing to treat users’ computers like rollout infrastructure. There is a version of this story that is too simple. It goes something like this: Google is shoving AI onto everyone’s machine, therefore everything about it is automatically spyware. I do not think that is the strongest argument. The better argument, and the one security people should care about, is that consent, transparency, and control are getting bulldozed in the name of “seamless” AI. Recent reporting from Malwarebytes says Chrome has been quietly placing a roughly 4GB Gemini Nano model file called weights.bin inside the OptGuideOnDeviceModel directory on eligible systems, with no clear up-front consent prompt and no meaningful notification.
