I remember begrudgingly making Ina Garten’s Tuna & Hummus Sandwiches during the first year of the project and questioning the combination. It sounded like something I’d check off the list and never think about again. But of course Ina didn’t steer me wrong! The open-faced sandwich starts with a slab of toasted bread spread with Ina’s classic hummus, punched up with hot sauce, lemon, and garlic but store-bought is, of course, fine. On top goes a tuna salad that has everything I want: crunch from celery, onion, and cornichons, brightness from lemon juice and Dijon, and just enough mayo to hold it together without turning it heavy. The hummus gives the sandwich creamy, garlicky richness, while the tuna salad brings briny crunch and sharpness. Then those thin slices of radish finish it off with a peppery snap.
