In recent years, computer keyboards have become a major customisable accessory. Given how many hours people spend in front of them, whether being productive at work or at leisure by playing games, keyboards are the major form of input to a computer so it might make sense to spruce it up a bit. While I’ve been a staunch advocate for mechanical keyboards for their superior feel and less fatiguing user experience, this field has much advanced beyond the days of the standard 104-key layout and Cherry MX switch (and my dinosaur mixed-switch keyboard). Nowadays, we have a variety of keyboard layouts to choose from, each removing and/or repositioning keys to save space. There are also plenty of different switch types – all part of optimising the tactile and response characteristics to each users’ taste at a range of budgets.
