I left California with just under 500 species recorded on iNat. I'm now very close to 580. Pretty wild! Nearly every day on this trip so far, I've been able to spend some time in a place with wild plants and animals. We didn't go hiking every day, but I did spend at least an hour outside every day, and there's lizards, birds, and weeds-we-don't-have-in-SoCal everywhere. I did not expect to photograph this many new things this quickly! The most surprising thing I've recorded so far was a Robber Fly, or a type of predattory fly that snatches other bugs out of the air. The thing was over an inch long: I have also photographed a bunch of fence lizards here - little unremarkable lizards which look, to me, identical to the lizards we have in LA. However, iNat (and local IDers) tell me that they are actually considered a different species. They probably all look the same to me because the camoflage is working on me.
