In my business I need to do a lot of explanation. Any form of misunderstanding can be costly and painful. Therefore, both the client and myself need to have meeting of the minds. I used to asked "Do you understand?" Nearly all the time, the client answer they understood but their expression shows otherwise. Then I change my approach by asking "Did I explain it clearly?" Questions immediately came and I welcome it. I speculate that by asking "Do you understand?", it makes the person uncomfortable to admit they do not understand. When I asked "Did I explained it clearly?" It puts the burden of explanation on myself, this allows the listener to ask questions without feeling awkward. Give this approach a try and see what happens. Did I explain it clearly?
