For no particular reason, I have decided to try and pry myself out of Google's clutches in whatever ways that I can. That part is really crucial because I think I have contemplated doing this cold turkey before and found it incredibly daunting. But as I continue to go down the path of selfhosting and searching out alternate ways of Using Da Computer I think it might be helpful/inspiring to some folks how I'm doing this, and where I'm planning to go with it. My networking setup is, basically: ASUS NUC 14 Pro+ (in my living room) A Synology NAS with 70ish TB of storage (in my living room) A VPS in Finland (through Hetzner, $5/mo) A VPS in Virginia (through Hetzner $13/mo) All these devices are connected via Tailscale. I consider the VPS in Finland to be more secure, and the VPS in Virginia I consider less secure. United States hosting is very risky, so I basically use this one only as a stable IP address that I can point a URL to in order to then access my local network (via Tailscale)…
