I’ve settled into being some kind of “emulation guy” over the years — a quick glance at the backlog of posts on this very website will prove that point for me — but I’ve never considered myself a “hardware emulation guy.” The world of FPGA development, preordering or missing out on preordering Analogue consoles, and MiSTer devices has always seemed to me like a too-expensive hobby to get into with advantages that are harder to find than the extremely low-effort and significantly more accessible software emulation route. While I can appreciate that hardware emulation is technically more “precise” in a lot of ways, the upfront cost of achieving that accuracy pales in comparison to the generally free experience of playing games on basically every device I already own.
