A very warm day at Fromebridge with the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust to continue putting up the willow screens near the reserve entrance. We had already banged in five posts a couple of weeks ago, so we thought it would be straightforward to plonk in the rest and get the screens up. Caroline and I donned helmets, grabbed the tape measure and spirit level and started to bash in the first post. We started the pilot hole with the wrecking bar, but it soon became clear after a few sessions with the rammer that the posts were not really sinking further than 400mm (they need to be 800mm). Delivery of fence panels We thought that maybe we had just hit a particularly tight spot, so marked out the next post to see if it was any easier. But despite even better preparation with the starter hole, they just weren’t shifting any deeper. It seems the ground has just compacted and hardened further with the lack of rain.
