I got my hands on a Geekom minipc which has a AMD Ryzen 7 8745HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics, 32GB RAM. It is a very nice and fast minipc that runs FreeBSD well. All was going well until this morning my desktop started freezing and stuttering which was very odd. Nothing was using significant CPU, so obviously it has to be the IO choking. No errors in dmesg, ZFS looks fine. But I checked the output of gstat on FreeBSD and ... we're seeing upwards of 600ms per write operation. Not good. SMART comes up clean. SMART is almost never useful. By the time SMART tells you something is wrong, it's probably too late. smartctl 7.5 2025-04-30 r5714 [FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p8 amd64] (local build) Copyright (C) 2002-25, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Model Number: WPBSN4M8-1TGP Serial Number: LPH125090305131 Firmware Version: SN28087 PCI Vendor/Subsystem ID: 0x2094 IEEE OUI Identifier: 0x0c82d5 Total NVM Capacity: 1,024,209,543,168 [1.02 TB]…
