Once a colony of the British Crown, Singapore was abandoned by the Brits when it needed help. WWII revealed how Britain’s colonies were nothing more than piles of plunder to be siphoned off. My study of Southeast and South Asian history in school made me into a staunch anti-colonialist. I guess that’s not a common thing to say in Singapore, with its rose-coloured memory of its colonial history. As for me, I puke a little when I hear the word “Commonwealth”, as though this label is supposed to mean anything more than “you were ours”. So when the colonial instinct rears its head in this day and age, I feel disgust well up from within. Case in point: *Trump’s US with its sights set on Greenland, Venezuela, Cuba and who knows how many more (no thanks to the comical Donroe Doctrine) *Israel with its hordes of illegal settlers eating into Palestinian land on the West Bank *Russia wanting to swallow Ukraine *China and its militant behaviour in the South China Sea I guess as long as countries…
