Each May in the UK, we have Mental Health Awareness week. In 2026, it will be between 11th and 17th May. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), ‘mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities, learn and work and to contribute to their community’. Mental health problems are something that affects approximately 1 in 4 people in any given year. In England alone, 1 in 6 people are experiencing a common mental health problem (e.g. anxiety and depression) in any given week. 9 out of 10 people with mental health problems have said that they experience stigma and discrimination because unlike physical injuries, these issues cannot always be seen. This has meant that only 1 in 4 people who have experienced mental health problems have sought help. So what are the key symptoms to look for?
