Fedora 44 has released! I got a little popup saying i can update. First of all, that popup only popped up because i said i wanted a popup: i can disable them at any time and i will never get an update popup again. This in itself is enough to make my mindset about updates significantly more positive than my mindset when it comes to updates on windows or macos. The second thing about updates on linux is that each update really does feel like my computer is getting better. Perhaps the gnome 2 to gnome 3 update was a little controversial, but now i think everyone who didn’t like gnome 3 has moved to another desktop that suits them better, so whether you are on gnome, kde, or something else, each update is the result of a group of people polishing the experience and adding genuinely useful features. Even in the plasma 5 to plasma 6 transition, my desktop didn’t visually change in any significant way. Contrast that with the enormous design redo that apple pushed out to make everything look…
