Last week, I had a call with someone for an upcoming project. I naturally asked how the weather was. Shortly after I asked, I realised that I don’t like to ask about the weather just because British people like talking about the weather. I realised that I wanted to see a sliver of another world; I wanted to visualise the world around the person with whom I was speaking, just for a moment. The weather is a good way to do this. I can imagine sun and clouds and snow.We then got to talking about animals – the highland cows here and the racoons near where the person with whom I was speaking lived. This discussion brought a similar joy to ones about the weather: I got to learn more about animals and share a slice of an animal unique to the place in this world that I call home.On reflection, there are surely many directions into which I can take a discussion that relate to the world around someone.
