Major League Baseball’s Opening Day happens–for most teams–during the first week in April. For some baseball fans, Opening Day is a special time to rival Christmas or Thanksgiving or New Years Day. With it comes a set of traditions, both local and national, that celebrate the return of America’s Pastime–the sport of baseball, that is. In Cincinnati, Opening Day is a city holiday–schools close and the high school marching bands join zoo animals and fire trucks in the annual opening day parade; in St. Louis, the Budweiser Clydesdales lead the parade, if only around the ballpark’s warning track. Often, famous singers or Broadway stars will sing the national anthem, and US presidents have been known to throw out the season’s first pitch for their favorite teams. And on social media and across the internet, reports about the wild and wacky foodstuffs served at each team’s stadium start to hit that first week of April as well.
