When you get to that place, and going back to university next fall is no longer an option, options are what you have to weigh. Let’s posit two types of people: those who want to make as much money as possible, and those whose priority is something else. If you are in the first group, don’t consider book publishing. You’ll do OK, but there will always be friends who are making more than you are. The second group contains multitudes. Probably most openings for graduates in industry will involve selling: companies tend not to look in your direction in order to discover toothpaste-tube filling machine minders, and they probably already to have all the toothpaste-mixing chemists they need. Advertising might sound superficially attractive, but of course it does involve trying to sell things you might prefer not to promote. Selling is a personality-driven job. Many have it; most do not.
