Chris Titus: System76 has been building COSMIC as its own desktop environment, and on paper that sounds great. More competition in Linux desktop development is a good thing. The problem is not that COSMIC exists. The problem is that Pop!_OS 24.04 ships a beta desktop on top of an Ubuntu LTS base and then expects users to treat it like a dependable daily driver. That creates a mismatch in expectations: People hear “24.04” and “LTS” and expect stability. People buy System76 hardware and expect the software to be polished. New Linux users hear Pop!_OS recommended and assume it is a safe starting point. Right now, those assumptions are wrong. I like Pop!_OS, but Cosmic should have continued as a beta option, alongside a default Gnome-based release for a while longer to hammer out some of the issues that Chris highlights. ➝ Source: christitus.com
