Discovering how my great-great grandfather George Pleau became a citizen was like putting together a jigsaw puzzle from different clues in records, historical facts, a newspaper article and one key find via FamilySearch Full Text Search. Below seems to be the basics of how George (and Emma, by virtue of their marriage) became a United States citizen: Sometime between 1868 and 1869, George and Emma immigrated from Quebec to Rochester, NY. How did they immigrate? I believe I found a major clue from a later newspaper article. On June 23, 1874, George and his family traveled with a delegation from the French-Canadian Saint John Baptiste Benevolent Society and the pastor of their church (Our Lady of Victory). The article detailed how the delegation travelled: from Charlotte (the northernmost section of Rochester along the Genesee River and Lake Ontario), across Lake Ontario and to Port Hope, Ontario.
