Review by Sandre the Giant Released: 15th May 2026 Scottish blackened thrashers Tyrannus have been hard at work for a number of years now, crafting the follow up to their 2022 debut full length, ‘Unslayable’. I really enjoyed that album, and I have tried to keep up on some of their side releases in between times, but it has been a ‘wait with baited breath’ type situation for me for ‘Mournhold’, their new full length. Clothed in a glorious pink and black cover art by artist Fabian van Beek, ‘Mournhold is out now through True Cult Records. It has been four years since the last Tyrannus release, and the band has clearly been spending that time really honing their songcraft, because ‘Mournhold’ is a diverse and multi-layered beast. Opener ‘Violent Inheritance’ is dense in tone, with a real grasp of the slower and more melancholic sections in between the brutally heavy black metal. There are many shades to Tyrannus’ work, from the rabid thrashing of ‘Seizing Stars’ to the cold morose tones…
