Every Saturday we round up the best writing about beer from the past week. This time, we’ve got gruit, jesters and speckled hens. First, some news. Spanish brewing company Damm has, for some mysterious reason, acquired the Speckled Hen beer brands from Greene King which, for some equally mysterious reason, was willing to sell them. We say mysterious because it’s not clear from any of the press releases what the business strategy might be on either side, just that everyone is very delighted, heritage will be respected, it’s the dawning of a great new era, and so on. We suspect most drinkers won’t notice or care – did they even realise that Old Speckled Hen, an old Morland brand acquired in 1999, was a Greene King beer? What’s interesting to us is that, a decade or so ago, it was craft breweries and brands being acquired; now, it’s beers with the whiff of heritage and tradition about them that are the hottest commodities. We suspect a Bass style marketing push for Old Speckled Hen…
