Photo of the Week: Pectoral Sandpiper

Spring migration is in full swing in southeast Michigan, with songbirds, waterfowl, and shorebirds making their way through and from our area on their journey north. A bit early for our area, the Pectoral sandpipers I found this past week were foraging in a muddy harvested cornfield about 15 feet from the road. I had to peer through phragmites that lined the road to get an almost unobstructed view of the several dozen sandpipers in the field. And somehow managed to capture a photo at the time the sandpiper was getting to ready to fly off. Gorgeous bird; the white underside of the wing has a beautiful light brown pattern.
