Over the past few weeks, I have seen a surprising number of “Open Web” types—no, I won’t name names, but you can probably all figure out whose blogs I read, and they numbered at least three that I can remember—say something that I find at least mildly perplexing. Over and again, I see people who I feel should know better talk about how, really, the AI bubble’s problem comes from a centralized market seeing people and the Internet as a resource to strip-mine, and that we can solve this with “Good AI,” the same thing that the big companies offer to and inflict upon us, but with us having seized the means of production1.
