There’s been a lot of talk about the Russian propaganda, in Western media, recently.Russian propaganda (or “misinformation”) is usually portrayed as an invincible juggernaut, an irresistible force that the small bean western powers can’t do nothing about (or, at the very least, they are struggling to). Very very powerful, and nearly unstoppable1.Is it though?Because if you think it through, this kind of argument is built upon am implicit premise that less pluralistic regimes (such as Russia) somehow have an upper hand in propaganda compared to the more pluralistic ones (like the US). The Russians can easily influence the American hearts and minds, but are themselves perfectly immune to the foreign influences. Big scary Russia can talk gullible American audience into, well, anything, because it is just so good in talking people into stuff.With this text, I want to put this discourse into some historical context.
